Car Rental and Transport Guide for Students in Cyprus

A car rental guide for university students in Northern Cyprus: age requirements, affordable cars, sharing costs and transport tips for Nicosia, Kyrenia and Famagusta.

Economy-class Renault Clio for students

Thousands of students come to Northern Cyprus for university each year. As they settle into campuses in Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta and Morphou, they ask the same question: how do you get around the island, and is renting a car worthwhile? This guide brings together what students need to know to explore the island while protecting their budget.

How do students get around Cyprus?

Most campuses are linked to city centres by shuttles and municipal buses, but services become less frequent in the evenings and at weekends. Intercity minibuses work on main routes, but reaching beaches, villages and remote areas such as Karpaz is almost impossible.

Many students therefore use public transport during the week and rent a car with friends for weekends, holidays and public holidays.

Age and driving licence requirements for car rental

At Carmio, the economy vehicle group requires a minimum driver age of 21 and a driving licence held for 1 year. If you are under 21, a friend in your group who meets these requirements can be registered as the main driver. Turkish driving licences are valid directly in the TRNC.

Remember that a credit card in the driver's name is required when renting. Debit cards and cards belonging to another person cannot be used for the deposit.

7 tips to protect your budget

With the right planning, renting a car can be much more economical than taxis and tours.

  • Share the cost: for a group of 4, the daily cost per person is lower than a taxi ride
  • Choose an economy or diesel car: lower fuel consumption makes a difference on longer routes
  • Book early: prices and demand rise after exams, during public holidays and in summer
  • Watch for promotional codes: discounts are applied at the payment step of the reservation
  • Return the car with the same fuel level: missing fuel may be charged above petrol-station prices
  • For a weekend, collect on Friday evening and return on Monday morning: more exploring in fewer days
  • Do not skip protection: narrow campus car parks increase the risk of scratches

Quick transport notes by university city

Nicosia: the island's capital and the city closest to Ercan Airport. Parking in the old town is limited; choose car parks outside the walls.

Kyrenia: a centre for weekend escapes, with coastal roads and mountain views. Traffic around the harbour increases in summer.

Famagusta: with spacious campuses and flat roads, this is an easy city in which to get used to driving. Routes to Salamis and Karpaz start here.

Morphou and Lefke: quiet university towns in the west of the island. Orange groves and the ruins of Soli are a short drive away.

Weekend route ideas for students

For a day trip, combine Kyrenia harbour, Bellapais and St. Hilarion. With two days, stay overnight in Famagusta and visit Golden Beach in Karpaz the next day. Sunset at Alagadi followed by dinner in Kyrenia is a classic student escape after exam week.
