Driving is the most flexible way to explore Northern Cyprus. With limited public transport, a rental car is almost essential for reaching everywhere from Kyrenia's bays to the tip of Karpaz on your own schedule. This guide brings together the rules, documents and practical road tips you need before renting a car in the TRNC.
Why rent a car in Cyprus?
Northern Cyprus may look small, but its attractions are scattered and far apart. From Nicosia, Kyrenia is half an hour away, Famagusta an hour, and Cape Apostolos Andreas at the far end of Karpaz about two and a half hours. Buses and minibuses connect cities, but reaching beaches, villages and historic buildings means relying on timetables.
A rental car saves both time and money: taxi fares on the island are high, and for a group of two or three, a day's rental often costs about the same as a single airport transfer.
- Reach beaches and villages without worrying about timetables
- Travel directly from Ercan Airport to your hotel
- Save substantially compared with taxis when travelling in a group
- Enjoy flexibility for sunsets, nightlife and early-morning outings
Left-hand traffic: what to watch for on your first day
Traffic in Cyprus drives on the left, as in the UK, and cars have the steering wheel on the right. This is the biggest change for drivers from Turkey, but most adjust within a few hours. We recommend making your first drive at a quiet time and choosing an automatic car so you do not have to get used to changing gears with your left hand.
At roundabouts, traffic travels anticlockwise and you give way to vehicles already on the roundabout. Right turns cross the oncoming lane, so take extra care when turning right.
- Position the car nearer the centre line rather than the right edge of the lane
- Give way to traffic coming from the right at junctions
- Try the stalks on your first day to find the indicators rather than the wipers: their positions may be reversed
- At pedestrian crossings, look right first, then left
Driving licence, age and document requirements
Turkish driving licences are valid in the TRNC, with no additional international driving permit required. For visitors from other countries, a valid licence from their home country is usually sufficient. At pickup, you must present your original licence, identity card or passport and a credit card in the driver's name.
At Carmio, minimum age and driving licence duration vary by vehicle group. Economy cars require age 21 and a licence held for 1 year, while premium cars have higher requirements. Each vehicle's requirements are clearly shown on its details page.
Deposits, insurance and protection packages
A security deposit that varies by vehicle group is held on your credit card during rental and released when the vehicle is returned undamaged. Given Cyprus's narrow village roads and tight city parking, choosing comprehensive protection helps avoid unexpected costs for small scratches and dents.
Compare excess amounts and included services at the reservation protection step before choosing your package.
Fuel, parking and speed limits
Petrol stations are common in TRNC cities and along main roads, but less frequent in rural areas such as the Karpaz Peninsula. Make a habit of filling the tank before setting off on a longer route.
In city centres, particularly Kyrenia harbour and inside Nicosia's walls, use paid car parks. Speed limits are generally 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80–100 km/h on intercity roads; speed checks are frequent.
Driving to Southern Cyprus
Taking a car rented in the north to Southern Cyprus requires the rental company's permission and separate insurance arranged at the crossing. This insurance generally covers third-party liability only; your rental vehicle's protection may not be valid in the south. Contact our customer service team before booking if you plan to cross.
